My bushhog manual says that it should be run at 540 RPM. I would definitely adjust the slip clutch. It's rather easy. Loosen up the bolts. Tighten them down to when you just feel that you have some engagement. Start up the tractor with the bush hog. If it slips at all when you engage the PTO, tighten the bolts a turn to turn and a half and repeat.

Jul 17, 2012 · As stated above, get whatever matches your tractors best. My first Bush Hog batwing had a 540--no problems, The Bush Hog I am running now is identical, only 1000 RPM. Did this so we could use it on different tractors (some with only 1000) I mow a lot of road ditches, and I really LIKE the CV joints. They run much smoother when turning.
If it has several PTO speeds, you always want the lowest (550). For the PTO to turn at 550, the engine RPMs would be around 10% below redline. Then with PTO gearing and engine speed fixed, you can use the fastest ground speed at which the mower doesn't seem to be straining.

If it is designed for a 540(or 1000) RPM PTO, run it at that RPM regardless of any other factors. It is not dependent on what you are cutting. Different sizes of bush hogs will have different gear boxes in order to provide the proper blade tip speed. Running it slower or faster can cause problems.
